Information Operations (IO) is the ability to influence, disrupt, corrupt or usurp adversarial human and automated decision-making processes. This is done through the integrated employment of Electronic Warfare (EW), Computer Network Operations (CNO), Military Information Support Operations (MISO), Military Deception (MILDEC), Operations Security (OPSEC), and other supporting capabilities. While attempts to control the flow of information by military and governments has been present for ages, advances in technology have allowed for the broadened use of Information Operations, which remain a critical component to US military operations.
However, the protection of our own information and information systems is also critically important to national security and successful operations. Those who wish to do us harm, from governments to terrorist organizations, are equally aware of these capabilities and they seek to gain advantages on the battlefield through information operations. Whether it is through cyber attacks or the spread of idealistic propaganda, the threat is real – subtle but devastating. The ability to combat these threats requires both the technical thinking and operational mindset of experienced IO Planners.
